the person on the cell phone seems to be talking to himself. he appears demented, speaking at a volume inappropriate to his surroundings. he and his interlocutor are in some other space - a non-place where their visual field is less believable because they are concentrating on what they are hearing. they have given themselves over to the technology of communication, which, as far as communication is conerned, is yet another step removed. there is an inherent loneliness associated with the temporary absence of the cell phone user.
