john w. keely's 'hydro-vacuuo engine,' 1872 supposedly used a vacuum or 'etheric force' derived from the atomic disintegration of a drop of water to generate perpetual motion. however spurious, devices like this hearkened the end of the 19th century debate over the nature of empty space, and paved the way for the admission of invisible, non-mechanical factors to be considered in physics.
